The Donkey Kong Country Returns HD game is a barrel-blasting adventure for the Nintendo Switch family of systems. Here are five helpful tips and tricks for players who are new to the game, including details about Super Guide, different difficulty modes, collectibles, co-op play, and more.

What is Super Guide and who is Super Kong?

Once you’ve been defeated a set number of times in a level, Professor Chops will appear to offer you a chance to activate Super Guide. You can watch Super Kong play through and complete the level. You can even take back control at any time! You won’t be able to keep any items Super Kong collects, but you can always go back and play the level again to nab KONG letters, puzzle pieces, and more.

What’s the difference between Modern Mode and Original Mode?

Modern Mode gives Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong each an extra heart and includes some other changes to make tricky levels a little easier for players, like the ability to carry up to nine items into a level. For a tougher challenge, you can select Original Mode. Original Mode is the way the game was played in its original release on the Wii system. You can only carry one item per level in Original Mode. There is also Mirror Mode, which is unlocked by beating the game. In Mirror Mode, the levels are reversed!

How do you collect KONG letters and puzzle pieces?

Letters spelling out K-O-N-G are hidden throughout each level. You can unlock a secret level in each world when you collect all the KONG letters in all levels of that world. Your KONG letter progress within a level is saved when you reach a checkpoint but is lost if you quit the level and return to the world map. KONG letters are usually easy to spot, but puzzle pieces can pose a tougher challenge because they are hidden in out-of-the-way places. Once you pick up a puzzle piece, your puzzle piece progress is automatically saved, even if you’re defeated. Whew!

What is co-op mode like for two players?

You and a pal can explore Donkey Kong Island together in local (couch) co-op mode, even with only one pair of Joy-Con controllers. The player with more experience might want to play as Donkey Kong, while the less-experienced player can control DK’s little buddy, Diddy Kong. Diddy Kong is a peanut-popping powerhouse who can ride on Donkey Kong’s back and extend jumps by gliding with his Rocket Barrel.

What happens if one player falls behind in co-op mode?

If your co-op player goes off screen while playing through a level, a countdown will appear and the player who fell behind will be teleported to catch up to the player who has moved ahead. This can be very helpful for tricky platform levels where some spots may require more experience to get through. If your co-op player has been knocked out or defeated, you can bring them back into the game—as long as they have Red Balloons to spare! You can use in-game Banana Coins to buy Red Ballons from Cranky Kong’s in-game shop.
