How do I play?
In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, your goal is to…well…smash your opponents! Pummel your foes with a bevy of blows and try to launch them off the stage. The more damage a fighter takes, the farther they’ll fly. And if you’re the unlucky soul that gets launched, don’t give up—try to make it back to the stage and keep fighting!
But how do you send them flying?
Glad you asked! Pressing the A Button will perform standard attacks like punches. Not too flashy but every bit helps. However, if you quickly flick the Control Stick in a direction and press the A Button, you will perform a powerful move called a Smash Attack. These attacks can launch your opponent in the air!
What fighter do I choose?
You may have noticed that this game has many, many fighters. Some of them may be familiar to you while others may be a mystery. While we recommend a fighter like Mario or Kirby for brand-new players, try out as many fighters as you can! They all have their strengths and weaknesses…and are all snappy dressers might I add.
But they’re different, right?
Yep! Very different. The B Button is for special moves and these special moves can be wildly different from character to character. Pulling off different special moves is easy though: just move the Control Stick up, down, or to the side while pressing the B Button.
What are items?
Some players prefer to play without items and that’s totally fine. However, if you want a little bit of pizzazz to your fight, try playing with items. Random items will fall from the sky and have different effects when you use them. For example, a Black Hole can be thrown that draws in fighters and items. Or maybe you want to use the Banana Gun? How about a helpful Bullet Bill? Reacting to different situations is one of the biggest things that makes Super Smash Bros….well, Super Smash Bros.
What about stages?
Remember how we said that thing about “reacting to different situations?” This goes double with stages! There are plenty of surprise Stage Hazards to discover, including stages that change shape and guest characters that suddenly appear. Well, that about covers the basics.
