You can recruit these five swappable partner characters to join your party in turn-based battles in the Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door game for the Nintendo Switch family of systems. In this Play Nintendo Tips & Tricks article, you can learn about the special abilities and special attacks for Goombella, Yoshi, Koops, Madame Flurrie, and Admiral Bobbery. You can also take our poll to choose which partner character you would want to play with!

Goombella

I believe the legendary treasure truly does exist! And I REALLY want to find it!

This plucky Goomba girl is your go-to partner for valuable insight and advice. If you’re lost in the game, you can press the ZL button and Goombella will give you a hint on what to do next! When you’re out in the field or in front of an object or character, you can press the X button and this upbeat archeologist will give you important information. She’s helpful in battle, too—she can use the Tattle move to give you an enemy’s current stats, weak points, and more.

Koops

My tummy’s getting upset… Let’s find the guy in charge before I lose my nerve!

Koops is a shy yet determined Koopa. In battle, Koops will retreat into his shell to ram enemies with attacks like Shell Toss or Power Shell. Out in the field, you can press the X button and he’ll retract into his shell and then throw himself at far-away items, enemies who are walking around, or switches which might need activating.

Madame Flurrie

I shall ever love the stage! I must feel the spotlight shine on me again! I MUST!

Madame Flurrie tends to be a bit dramatic, but that’s no surprise—this retired actress loves the spotlight. In battle, she can steal an enemy’s HP with her Lip Lock attack (a kiss!) or use her Gale Force attack to conjure wind to send enemies flying. Out in the field, she can blow a gust of wind to blow away enemies or remove pieces of paper to reveal hidden passages and more in the environment.

Yoshi

Let’s rock, Gonzales! I’m ready to chew this dude up and spit him out!

Yoshi starts off as an egg in the game, but he eventually hatches into a scrappy little newborn baby. When you’re in the field, you can jump on Yoshi to ride him—it’s a quick way to travel around! Yoshi can also flutter jump across short gaps. During battle, this powerful partner can use Gulp to gobble an enemy and spit it out at another enemy in an attack which is effective against enemies with a strong defense.

Admiral Bobbery

Ah, the smell of the sea… I’d forgotten how sweet a scent it can be…

Admiral Bobbery is a salty old Bob-omb sailor who happens to be an expert in all things KA-BOOM. While you’re out in the field, you can press the X button to pick up Bobbery and throw him. After taking a few steps, he’ll explode. This handy attack can help clear rubble from an entryway, for example. He has several bomb-related attacks you can use in battle, including Bomb Squad and Bob-ombast.
